Moving on... Genuine Aero

Beautiful jacket but way overpriced. No label. I wonder what the 3233 plus the little triangle and type to small to read means ? I've never seen that before. Zipper looks original to me. My size too. Think I'll email him and tell him it's an Avirex. :)

Hello,
This is not a triangle but a capital A, Mr ARTHUR's name's initial. 3233 are the last 4 digits of his army serial number.
Very usual way to identify one's uniforms and gear.

Cheers,
Tim

redye, replaced zipper?

I agree. It's been re-sprayed and the Conmar zipper is likely to be a replacement for a Crown or a Talon. However occasionally you do see Aeros with a Conmar zipper that was factory fitted.

Why do people remove labels from jackets? Or...how common is it for them to fall off over time?
Not something I've ever experienced with my jackets...even ones I've owned for 35+ years, yet labeless "vintage" jackets seem to pop up not all that infrequently on eBay.

They fall "off" and back on to an Avirex and then it's a $1200 jacket

Sometimes vets removed them because it was a goverrnment issued garment, often with "property Air force US Army" etc.. on the label. As A2 labels were machine stitched to the lining I seriously doubt that many actually fell off like Irvin jacket labels that were mainly tacked on to the fleece.

That makes sense. Thanks Andrew.

Lemme know if you're still on for Normandy Landings next year.

Except in this instance, some of the USAAF markings on the liner appear to have been put on where the label had originally been, meaning that it came off when still in service. Possibly removed as part of a depot refurb before being reissued to Mr. Arthur?

I did read somewhere that to keep the jacket when they were dismissed from the army service, the airmen had to declare that the jacket was "lost" and pay for it.
So after declaring the loss of it it wasn't very clever to keep on it the label declaring it "property of the US Army Air Forces".
So many labels were taken off the jackets.
I don't know if that's the case, but it makes sense to me.

I would guess it will sell at this more reasonable price. The lack of label usually devalues an original A2 by around 30%.

Andrew,

Do you know what contract # it is? 18775P? 21996? 16160?
