Mouton Help please!

Hi all,

Does any one know were to get good mouton in the UK? I've had some samples back from Aero in Scotland and I'm not convinced by them and the pics I've seen of eastmanns don't fill me with confidence either. I've been looking for some ladies coats in all the vintage stores I know, but can't find the right colour. Just wondered if anyone knew of a good source, or failing that if anyone had any spare out there.

I got a piece off of ebay that was alright. I am planning on taking it to a furrier in my neighborhood. He is actually a WW2 vet and I am hoping that he will be willing to fix my jacket.

An old school place like that (similar almost to a tailors shop) would more than likely have some scrap that would fufill your needs. Maybe they could do the work for you too.

I know where you're at. I've had my an 6552 done with a piece of an old ladies coat. The fixing wont be a problem, any good taylor will be able to do it for you, its just the finding of the right mouton thats a pain. I'm not very convinced at my jacket in that department. Its not so much the colour that I'm bothered about but the fabric itself. The mouton on ladies coats tends to be very nice and soft where the wool on an old g-1 s is rugged and curly like real sheepwool. I still have'nt figured out if this is something that will happen after wearing it for 3 decades ( the nice honey color is for certain an ageing thing; look at those old pics where they where new, the're almost black sometimes) or that it was just a different type of mouton which I have'nt been able to get my hands on yet. I guess I'll have to wear mine for 20 more years and see;)

The stuff I've got, and which is common for ladies coats, looks much more like the mouton used on b-10's and b-15's

Anyway, i still got a piece of mouton left from my jacket. You're more than welcome to have some to fix your coat with. I have'nt got any pics of it just now as my kids descided to use my handy little digital camera to make an underwater documentary with...

Ahh the many flavors of mouton! These are all early to mid 60's G-1s, with exception to the black fur on the left which belongs to a 50's Cagleco. There were many different dies and qualities of mouton used by the various manufacturers as these pics show.

Thanks Guys for the info and offers,

I've got my eye on a blonde! mouton 40's ladies coat at the moment. So I'll let you know how it goes. Its for my M-422a so I'd quite like a more golden aged mouton. Love the jackets Jaydee, I've got three hanging up at the moment and my wife is already moaning about it! How she hates the colder months!

The mouton on my Schott moto jacket is from a ladies coat off ebay. You can cut the whole coat into strips and sell what you don't use as mouton for G-1 jackets for a lot more money than what you paid for the coat.

I found out by accident .... just wash the mouton with baby shampoo, when it dries, it's rugged, and curly.

If that doesn't work, then you musta bought rabbit. :)

Cheers for the tip about the shampoo, I'm gonna give that a try tonight and see what it does. I just hope my wife wont catch me doing it. For some strange reason she finds stuff like a grown man washing mouton with baby shampoo irressistibly hilarious...

:) Still, probably safer than using her shampoo.

And I found photographic evidence ... before, it was smooth, and soft, now it looks like the Real McCoy.

The mouton on my C contract G-1 used to make my eyes water, but after a gentle rinse with some dog Shampoo it's in great shape. Still silky and straight too. I'm going to have to keep an eye out for an old lady coat, I need some mouton to fix up a '50's G-1.

So maybe baby shampoo= curly
Dog shampoo= straight and silky?
Plus a little brylcream for that slicked-back look :D

Cheers

....just spraying plain water on the mouton works...gets rid of the smooth texture...
