Larger Size Monarch A-2 with Provenance

Hello Gentlemen! Here is one I'm putting up for sale. I may edit the listing a bit later to include more on the Iwo Jima aspect as that is quite fascinating and I learned a lot when I read "Flags of Our Fathers" this year. I hadn't put much thought into where Tinian was prior to reading the book and I had just collected the jacket originally in 2003 because it was a nice jacket in nice condition. Enjoy!

Great Monarch George and with excellent provenance. I think it's a size 42 comparing the measurements with my tagged size 44. Good luck with the sale.

Beyond doubt a beautiful jacket but it saddens me to think that ever left his family. You'd have to be on really hard times, cold hearted or ignorant to surely part with this.

Agreed.

Thanks, Gentlemen! Yes, it's definitely a very nice jacket and I would have definitely said a size 42, but I just sold a tagged 42 and it was definitely trimmer in the body than this one, which fits me rather loosely in the torso. But it seems that Monarch may have had quite a range when it came to sizing, so I'm splitting the difference. Platon, I didn't know you were in the market for such originals, otherwise we could have discussed a private sale. Unfortunately, now that there are bids on it, I'm afraid I can't end the auction early for such a transaction. I do have others though, so we can have a discussion on those off line. Yes, I agree that it is unfortunate that the heirs would have parted with something so nice, but I'm not sure that everybody puts as much importance on jackets as we do, so I am not terribly surprised. I can't recall who I got this jacket from, but I believe it may have been Dominic Flamini (sp?). It was a collector in Chicago who I do not think I have heard from for quite a long while.

The patch is actually glued in place, which is the only patch I've ever seen mounted that way. The leather on the patch is almost 1/8" thick, so it may have not lent itself well to stitching.

I finally just added the Iwo Jima material that I had been wanting to add to this listing since I put it up. It's pretty neat stuff to learn about and I thought that the VLJ members might find it informative to read about just in case you hadn't already known some of the why's and wherefore's about the reasons that the battle was fought. Take a look if you have a chance. It's all under the revision heading.
