More about Col. H.R. "Russ" Spicer, CO, 357th Fighter Group.
He is known for a speech he made to bolster morale among his fellow-captives in a POW camp in 1944. He was subsequently sentenced to be shot, but the camp was liberated before that could happen.

In the early 1930s, Spicer, then a lieutenant, ditched this modified Boeing P-12J during maneuvers in Hawaii. He swam away from the wreck. Wonder what those huge pods were under the wings?
