Jacket Art-Substituting Pinup Girls

I'm going to have a jacket painted, I'm shamelessly plagiarizing, Jerome's 'Dragon Lady' designed jacket, the one with Miss Lace and a B-29, (Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery)

I looked at Jerome's interpretation of the cartoon character, Miss Lace, and decided I wanted to pick out my own choice for Miss Lace. I looked over WW2 Vargas and Elvgren pinups, then moved up to the 1950's and looked at using Bettie Page as Miss Lace. After looking at 100's of brunette pinups, I've decided to use a current hottie, Megan Fox. Since Miss Lace was a cartoon and this is a fantasy tribute jacket, I decided being anachronistic was okay.

Go for it! Or should I say Go For Broke! Megan fox would be a perfect Miss Lace. What I usually say is "Your jacket, your choice of subject". Accuracy only goes as far as you want to push it, anachronistic or not. I'd love to see pictures of it when it's done.

I really didn't know the history of Miss Lace when I decided to have this jacket painted. Looking at pictures of her in her oriental inspired peek-a-boo dresses, I used to think she was the 'Dragon Lady' who plotted and schemed all sorts of no good. After a little googling, I found out Miss Lace was definitely not THE Dragon Lady who was in a different comic strip, Terry And The Pirates, written by the same artist, Milton Caniff. Miss Lace was in her own comic, Male Call which was only distributed to armed forces newspapers during WWII The only plotting and scheming going on in Miss Lace's comic, Male Call, were GIs trying to look down Miss Lace's décolletage. Unlike the Brit's comic femme fatale, Jane, who was more risque, actually allowing bared breasts, Miss Lace in comparison was more modest, instead of losing her clothes, her outfits did leave very little to the imagination.

So based on that, I went looking for a new girl to be my Miss Lace. Someone who was gorgeous and far less the 'Dragon Lady' sterotype; mean, deceitful, domineering, and mysterious. As one reviewer said about Miss Lace, "... innocent as opposed to world-wisdom; and always soft and sweet..."

The British 'Jane', who, to her audience's delight, managed to shed her clothes on a regular basis.
The writer figured correctly, if Jane wore less or nothing but a smile, it increased the troops morale.

ps- It was said, Jane was so important to morale building, the Admiralty gave advance copies of the strip to submarine captains, so the men on board wouldn't miss her when out to sea.

Miss Lace was the camp sweetheart in peek-a-boo outfits.

Betty Page, it's got to be Betty Page. Except for those SM pics she took, she's got the right look altogether. She's definitely no Dragon Lady.

Hey 442, I'm glad you explained the difference between Miss Lace and Dragon Lady. I always thought they were the same woman.

I'm agreeing with you in regards to Bettie Page being my Miss Lace, she has that look of soft, sweetness ...and more of the time period. ;)

As for learning about Miss lace vs. the Dragon Lady...see what researching jacket art can do to broaden your horizons

In the near future, I've been thinking about designing or copying something from the Korean War with an F-86 and Marilyn Monroe.

You can do a Korean War pic on a B-15. I saw a pic of Marilyn Monroe getting off an airplane on some base wearing a B15. It would make sense.

Gone, but not forgotten.
If it's the usual Marilyn picture that appears on the cover of Suit Up, and elsewhere ... the jacket is a blue nylon B-15C.

That's the one, deeb. Put Marilyn and an F-86 on a blue B15 and and you have yourself a winner. I normally don't go out of the WWII era but I'd wear one of those in a heartbeat.
