One of the amazing things you see in war photos is how action ages the face. You can tell he's quite a young fella - probably only in his 20s - but look how drawn his face has become around the cheek, mouth and nose. You see this a lot with images of people who have been under combat strain for some time.

USAAF kit isn't my big thing but I've always presumed that those A-9A mittens with the separate index finger were based on similar sheepskin and fur examples used in the RFC and RNAS during WWI.
