Great pics.. The USN 37J1B was a sharp-looking jacket. I picked up W&G's version (NA-1) awhile back, and have been wearing it often lately since the weather has been cooling down. VERY comfortable to wear. The jacket belonged to a couple of other forum members previously. I seriously doubt I'll ever sell it in the foreseeable future...
Thanks.. I'm not really certain what the grommets are for. I assume that they are included to replicate the attachments for the Hookless type zippers originally used during that time period.
Regarding the W&G version... I've read before that some folks discounted the type of stencil used for the 'USN' as incorrect. One can see from the period photo above, that the lettering is 'blocky' in comparison. Well, it appears the W&G stenciling can now be considered correct. I ran across this photo taken in 1937, which is VERY close:
concerning the grommets I just realized that the USN garment (class a bell-bottoms) also have grommets - with that type of clothes it was meant to pull a drawstring through it and tie stuff that belongs to one sailor together to not get lost during laundry - maybe the grommets on the jacket are kinda "leftover" from this practice?????
