Germany Air Force - flight jacket - 50's 60's

COL ET BOUTS DES MANCHES EN LAINE MAIS ATTAQUEE PAR LES MITES

Yeah, mine's suffering from that too ...

I picked one up recently just to check it out. Quite a nice jacket, the hide appears to be goatskin, but I can't get excited about the colour.

David, I agree completely. This is an intriguing design and I saw a number of originals at Colorado surplus stores in the late '80s-early '90s. The color isn't objectionable on its own but it does present a challenge when deciding what to wear it with. I imagine blue jeans would look OK, certain other colors not so much.

There's another variant of the Cold War-era German leather flight jacket, possibly worn by Bundesgrenschutz personnel. When you take a look at the pics you may well count your blessings for winding up with the grey one:

Finally, Gibson and Barnes offers two versions of this design:

Out of curiosity I called and apparently it can be special-ordered in black or brown (albeit with brass zippers, standard 2-ply knits, and a $98 upcharge). Now that would be nice!

I tend to wear mostly olive, or khaki, so the grey isn't a great match, but yeah, now that I've seen that green ... I am counting my blessings. ;)

I had one of these in black, a long time ago, and it wasn't one of my favourite jackets. Somehow the design didn't look good on me and it wasn't comfortable to wear either, so I gave it away.
Also when seeing this type of jacket on period photos of pilots wearing this jacket to my taste it doesn't look half as good as the A2 did in its days

The US ATOC commander wore one of these when I was stationed in Germany in the late 80's, early 90's. Didn't look too bad.

A few years back Sportsman's Guide were selling these surplus for about $99. I ordered one and thought it was pretty sharp. The patches on it were interesting. One of them has a NATO AWACS patch on the chest. The goatskin was very nice quality. I ended up ordering two more of them and they all had a different array of patches and rank. They are very comfortable and when you want to keep the wind out of your neck the collar that zips up into a turtleneck is handy. They're not good for real cold temperatures, since there's no insulation. I wore one with blue jeans to a concert and received compliments on the jacket. The one I wore had a patch with a horse on it that looks very similiar to the Ferrari logo so somebody thought it was a European racing jacket. The ones I own are in excellent shape, much better condition than the one shown in the link at the beginning of this thread.

You used to be able to buy them from Camden Market. They were pretty cheap I think, maybe about 50 pounds. You can see Bernard from New Order wearing one in the Blue Monday video...suits him well.
