Hey everyone,
I have long been considering ordering a M421a jacket off Fivestar, to have a summer-weight Navy-style jacket and potentially something to patch in future.
I’ve seen previous posts and threads from members about sizing and alterations and have also contacted Shawn Ali directly, but need a bit of advice and second opinions before I commit.
I told Shawn my height (5 foot 11/180cm tall) and approximate chest/waist size (40 inch chest/99cm & around 34 inch waistline – that tends to fluctuate so didn’t give my weight!) and measurements of my AVI G-1 in size 44 and VF Sportswear hybrid in size 42, as I want something in-between both that I can wear with both a t-shirt and a couple extra layers if necessary (British summers are unpredictable) but have airflow for warm/humid periods as designed while not looking comically oversized and bulky like modern styles so often are.
Looking at the Fivestar size chart and comparing it to my other jackets, I thought a size 42 or possibly a size 40 would suit me (I need a 120cm total chest size in most jackets without a bi-swing back to be fully comfortable, the outdoor Gymnastik I did in Germany finally paid off) but Shawn recommended a size 38 which I personally think might be too form-fitting (I rarely wear just a t-shirt under a jacket, even in summer and prefer to have the option to layer up).
Could anyone with similar measurements to me please give their own suggestions/experience?
Also, I will definitely prefer longer sleeves than standard; Shawn sent a picture of how they measure sleeve length (not how I/the forum advice does it) so could anyone with a 38-42 size jacket, stock or not, please tell me the measurement they get so I can ask Shawn accurately?

The measurements I sent Shawn: (with extra comments)
AVI G-1 (form-fitting in the chest, looks good but tight without the bi-swing elastic – sleeve cuffs tunnel slightly but I prefer that)
Chest: 114cm (57cm pit to pit)
Sleeve: 65cm
Shoulder: 51cm
Back: 65cm
VF Sportswear (comfortable, slightly broad in the shoulder and long in the arm – cuff only)
Chest: 120cm (60cm pit to pit)
Sleeve: 66cm
Shoulder: 51.5cm
Back: 64cm (feels longer than the AVI though)
And the image he sent - I read 22.75 inches there so about 57cm, I'd probably go for the same sleeve and back length but any comments/other's experience would be much appreciated!
