Re: Few more USN in Korea

That brings back some memories. I remember my mom helping my dad pack his seabag before he left for Korea.

Love the first one. Looks like the officers pitching in to belt up 20mm.

As for the second one, "you gotta love ANY photo of a Battleship"!!!

And one from WW2, as it’s my kid’s birthday this weekend, I’m on cake duty today so thought this was appropriate!

I have been in touch with one of my Father's former squadron member from VA-152. This fellow was with the squadron when it was reactivated for the Korean War using F4-U Corsairs from a USN Reserve Squadron VF-713 to be redesignated VA-152. In keeping with Corsairs and the Korean War here are a few color photos from the USS Antietam off the Coast of Korea from September 1951 until May of 1952. These photographs were taken by him and are close to Life. Weasel Loader will appreciate these photos as most of these photos were taken from an ordnancemen's perspective!

This should give you Jimmy Doolittle fans an idea on how the USS Hornet loaded the Mitchel Bombers aboard. This photograph was taken at the docks at NAS Alameda now home of the televsion program "Myth Busters". This must have been the same crane loading aircraft aboard the Antietam as was used to load the B-24s on the Hornet.

I want to leave you guys with a final photograph from this deployment and taken from the flight deck of the Antietam. I can not image. Hears to fare winds and following seas!

I was fortunate enough to have recieved these photographs last night just in time to share them with you guys and let the forum know one of my Father's sea stories on the first aniversary of his interment at Arlington. It went like this, once while I was with him on board the Oriskany, you have to remember that I was a little guy, and looking down off of the flight deck I mentioned to him that I could not believe the distance we were off of the water. In addition, I noticed that there was netting set up around the ships edge to catch those who might have otherwise been blasted overboard from jet or prop wash and not unlike the netting you see in this picture. I distinctly remember thinking and saying to him that I could not believe that someone could even survive the fall. To this Father added that he was once off the Straights of Formosa in a Typhoon and at that time he had seen waves breaking over the deck of the carrier.

After seeing this picture of the wave rolling over the deck of the Antietam I am finally resting easy because I now know for certain that he was not just telling me an old sea story. Heres to you DAD!

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those photos preserved very well. Looks like they were taken just yesterday. Hard to believe how close they pack those aircraft on the flight deck.

That last photo is amazing!!! :)

Thanks for sharing with us. ;)

What kind of Deck Jacket is that on the left? The regular blue one didn't have a windflap did it? Well my BR repro didn't.

Well spotted, Miles .... ;)

I can't figure it out either.

If you look closely it appears the individual at left may be wearing a sweater over his shirt, thereby creating the impression of a windflap. On the other hand, check out this one from MASH:

If the original version of this jacket was produced in blue, I believe it would explain the situation.
