Edwards G-1 Anomolies

I have three different G-1 jackets by Ralph Edwards. 1 is a 7823C, contract no. DSA-1-9366. Yes, I know that this contract doesn't appear, but looking at the label, you can seea 5 elsewhere, so this is clearly "9366". It has a plain weave single ply waistband. The cuffs are original to the jacket and quite worn, so it's unlikely someone would have replaced the waist band and left these cuffs. The 2nd is my original "issued" G-1, a 7823C, contract no.DSA-1-4342-64-C with single ply bi-weave waistband, repaired, but original. The 3rd is a 7823D, contract DSA-1-5366with single ply bi-weave waistband. Can you help with finding out why 2 contracts for a 7823C would have 2 different types of waistband and a 7823D would have a bi-weave waist band?

I'm wondering whether the waist knit was replaced with single weave before the cuffs became so worn for some reason and the cuffs took a battering later?

Actually, all your jackets are from 7823C. The first and third jackets are DSA-1-9366 (DSA-1-5366 doesn't exist) from C series made in fiscal year, 1965. This was the year when they started using the single wave waistband, although some examples might have been delivered with the bi-wave waistband as well.

As a side note, this was my first G-1 found here in South America for 15 $us back in 2007.

Jorge,
Thanks so much for sharing that information with me. I have what appears to be an unissued MIL-J-7823C Foster G-1 from contract No. 10003081 and it has the single ply waistband. Until your post I was a bit puzzled since some of the MIL-J-7823C jackets I have or have seen the bi-weave waistband. Now even I understand.

P.S. My Foster was about 15X what you paid for your Edwards G-1.

Nice jacket for sure and thanks for adding to the post Jorge
Shame the Roger Moore site has been wound down as it was a wealth of images and info

I just recently got this exact same coat, same tag and everything, from my grandfather. He got this from his brother who served as a navy pilot and had become an extra. It's in stellar condition, almost never worn (still trying to break it in). It also has the double weave on it. As I have only just found this forum, how special does it make this jacket?

You’ve showed us two different jackets a 42 and a 46. Both jackets are nice and good examples of Vietnam war era USN flight jackets. They are collectable but not very pricey .
