ebay fees, when did they become so expensive?

I've just been selling a few items recently, the first time in a few months. While checking my sales I noticed an invoice for £188 which considering my sales value is £999 I though this was a bit pricey. After a little investigation there were of course my listings fees but also a 10% final value fee on everything. On top of this of course, but not included in the quoted amount, is the frankly rip-off Paypal fee.

I'm a little shocked and would like to know at what point did ebay start charging a 10% fee on a listing.

The difficulty is of course that they can charge what they like as they have the market sewn up.

B*stards.

Damn - that is much more than I would have guessed. By the time you put together the ebay listing and final fees, and the paypal fees, you're looking at a good 15% of the final price. I suppose that's comparable to fees charged by live auctioneers (on the sellers' side, anyway), but that certainly adds up quickly.

Be careful not to list in multiple categories as this increases cost considerably. Also listing in Milltaria will remove the item from view on many ebay sites.
I sold £1000 of stuff recently and only paid £78.

Nah ... for you it's business as usual.

The link I posted earlier, in response to Steve, was for eBay.uk fees. As well as being higher anyway, they also include 15% VAT for residents of the EU.

Any idea which Country has the cheapest listing fees Dave? I recall many years ago when I started selling I wanted to list in US$ so asked Ebay how to do it. They advised me to list on Ebay US and that would be cheaper than listing on Ebay Australia and of course it automatically goes Worldwide.

Gents..

Listing on eBay US for a US$1.00 item. If it sells..

Listing fee AU$0.38 (US$0.30) eBay's suspect conversion rate.
Final value fee AU$0.38 + 2.4% (US$0.30 + 2.4%)

Paypal then take their cut AU$0.30 + 2.4%

So AU$1.08 less AU$0.96 - AU$0.12!

That is without paypal's extra 2.4%

No wonder they love the 99c listings!

I assume it's the US, Andrew ... like you, I signed up on eBay.com.
Can I switch from UK registered to US registered ?
I'm not so sure it's about where you registered. To sell on Ebay US I just open that site to create my listing. At least that's what i've been doing for years now and I don't recall ever having to have changed registration.

It's been a little while since I've done it but I think there's a bit of a glitch where it comes to listing the item location- but I can't give you specifics unfortunately.

Using Turbo Lister I can list on both simultaneously, which I am doing currently.
You just add sites and list accordingly. GBP would be the best bet for me, as Aussies
will get the items in Australia, with the price in GBP! Some may forget and bid
away..who knows..

Yes, John can easily list on ebay.com ... but he wants to be registered there to take advantage of the lower fee structure.

I think it might be messy, John ... financial details, credit cards, PayPal, addresses would all need to match up. It's probably easiest to go, and live there, and then set up a new user ID.

A small tip: if your in the UK or EU and have a VAT number make sure you register it with ebay. Then your fees are VAT free.

I noticed Ebay moved their company to Switzerland some time back to avoid paying taxes and I believe threats from the EU over the way they forcible link payments via Paypal. It breaks competition laws.

Or just buy and not sell too much ?
Thanks, David.
