Coastal Command Irvin

This one is very good condition, though not mint as the seller claims. It has a broken zip pull and wear to the cuffs, but still a nice example with the wartime owner being a Wing Commander, according to the seller. The start price is OTT. Although these CC jackets rarely sell for more than £550 with its provenance it might go for more, but perhaps not £800.

Well I was wrong. Someone has put in a bid on the jacket and whoever the person is they are no Ebay novice. :eek:

I don't like this seller. If, and it's a big if, he's telling the truth, a family heirloom is about to be sold without much thought, plus the description is rubbish and those photos in the black hood make me uncomfortable. The bidder needs his bumps felt.

I didn't care for the 'WHO FLEW MORE MISSIONS THAN PROBABLY ANYONE ELSE THROUGH THE WAR' bit. Apart from the absurdity of this remark, didn't our blokes fly 'ops'. It is a nice jacket though, but I wouldn't pay £800 for it.

I was thinking exactly the same thing, and a crazy price to pay. The bidder must have a desperate itch to scratch.

Seriously, why would you sell off your own Fathers flying jacket so easily. I don't have the time or energy but i'd be interested in asking him a few questions about Dad's career.

If the seller's Dad really had accumulated so many flying hours I doubt if the Irvin was worn for many of those judging by its condition. It would appear to be a size 4. The seller seems to imply his Dad served on Lincolns in the War, but these were not operational until just after the War. I guess it could be quite easy to invent a "history" for a jacket to inflate the price. I am not saying this guy is doing it, but you do come across sellers who regularly seem to sell their dad's jackets and I always wonder how many they actually had! :lol:

After an email to the seller I got this reply;

My father is nearly ninety now and has asked me to reserve his name for his own privacy. I can tell you he was in pilot training as war broke out and served throughout the war in heavy bombers he clocked up more missions than probably anyone, yet he always mentains his most rewarding mission was operation Manner (Manner from Heaven) dropping food to the dutch on to football pitches ect, the crew dropped there own rations in a initialed handkerchief on one occasion, father met the recipient years later she still had the hankie, father was the guest of the Royal family and government in recognition of what he and others achieved in feeding a starving people. the sizes you requested are as follows pit to pit 24"
shoulder to cuff 26"
shoulder to shoulder 21"

The last hostile operation in Lincoln bombers took place in Malaya with 100 Squadron. He retired from the RAF having served his complete working life in the service.
I can confirm the details you have highlighted in your mail

I am sure you will respect his wishes as to privacy i will however ask him if he will reconsider for the winning bidder,

It would appear to be a large size CC jacket either a 5 or a 6, which is extremely rare for a CC jacket which are normally a 4 or smaller.

Yes I noticed this as well. But there is still time for others to bid.
