Gents..

I have been spying this book for months now. The seller will not take emails, so I am not holding
out any hope of him accepting a bid. I would like to buy the book; however he has the restrictions
on. I have "relied on the kindness of strangers" in the past with great success. If anyone wants to
pocket $20 for the sake of forwarding on an eBay item let me know. I will cover the costs of the
item, all shipping to the proxy and Airmail on to Australia. And then your overage, and I take all
the fee hits..

It has been teasing me for too long. I have my WW1 Schipperfabrik Overseas cap, Army shirt, puttees,
WPG breeches, WPG Campaign hat and I need to research a bit of the footwear issue. WPG have the
Pershing boots, but I think the boondockers will fit the bill.

Thanks gents..

I have this book. I'll dig it out and we can sort out if you really want to spend the big bucks for one. It is a pretty good book, and one of the best on the subject in it's day, but it is from 1993. It's also more WW II oriented than WW I.

And, to answer your boot question, if you are aiming at a WW I enlisted impression, the boondockers would be the way to go. The Army version would be slightly closer, because of the more rounded toe but the difference is not enough to worry about.

Below is a much newer book on the subject, that can be found discounted from the price in the Publisher's link. I don't own this one, but have thumbed through it.

WTF? It is not Jeff Warner, it is Bret & Brett Werner. Reviews look good so I will
be grabbing this via Amazon next week. Will let you know just how chuffed I am
when it arrives. Thanks again for all the input. This is why, as a whole, you guys
rock!

Pending some original chevrons for the left sleeve of the shirt, and some pre-WW1 Web
gear from WPG, the outfit is looking pretty much sorted. Thanks to eBay sourced some
good WPG and Schipperfabrik kit. The Shotgun pouches are '38 pattern but the Trench
Gun makes me look a little like Ernest Borgnine and his mates. But I think I am prettier
than Ernest Borgnine. Most are! ;)

Oh! Puttees are originals...

Still waiting on the Werner book..

Looking good....and I don't think you need a shave!

Questions....did you find some chevrons yet....and what unit and campaign (or year) are you trying to portray?

I do the Aussie soldier thing everyday. Since I was 12 or so and I delved into Dad's wardrobe in the
garage I had idolised the US WWII kit and weapons. I NEARLY bought an M1 Garand for $450 in 1987;
however, Dad said to wait until I got my licence. Then Julian Knight went nuts and that killed that idea
until 2009 when I managed to get a Hudson M1 from Japan. I had purchased an M1903, dated 1923 and
it filled the gap for a US Marine for a while. Then the Tanaka, then the Eddystone M1917 and the Gibbs
M1903A4. There are two .303s there but they do little for me.

I have recently sourced They Came to Cordura, Wild Bunch, Villa Rides, Cannon for Cordoba and a few
others. Coming up on the centenary of WW1 I delved with a few eBay buys. I thought about the Cavalry
angle, but I don't do horses. And Aviation shits me to tears at present. So Infantry it is! Given the tropics
do not allow a comfortable climate for WW1 wools, the SW of the US and the pursuit of Pancho Villa is
pretty easy to accomplish. Schipperfabrik do both USMC and US Army chevrons very cheaply. Thanks for
the compliments. I walked out and Hayden's jaw dropped and he gave me a thumbs up and attracted the
mum attention to my outfit. I think 'dress ups' will put a smile on his face more regularly now. God knows
there are around thirty different outfits across 75 years of warfare!

Nicely said!

I think from where you are at, given what you have assembled in the picture, I agree either chasing Poncho Villa or making the last stand at Bataan is the way to go. With the style of campaign hat you have and the trench gun, you are closer to being right on for the 1941/42 impression than the Mexican Border.

For both, you also need an infantry cap cord for your campaign hat, and for the 1941/42 impression a screw post distinctive insignia to go in the front vent hole.

The web gear is going to close to the same for both, but the pre WW I webbing does have some differences that I don't think the currently made WW I reproductions replicate. However, the reproduction WW I gear would be prefect for a 1941/42 impression. As a collecting note, there is very little original WW II era US web gear dated before 1942. A few things, like map cases and canteen covers sometimes have 1941 dates on them, but for the most part what was being used was leftover WW I stocks.

I had been thinking before your last post that you really had a classic Hollywood look going. Those movies were not always 100% accurate, but many of the Directors and Actors were combat veteran's, and for the time brought a new degree of realism to the movies that had not been previously present. However, I had not been thinking Ernest Borgnine, but rather more of a Steve McQueen "Sand Pebbles" mojo. :D

PS: If you have not done any more ordering, why not post the links or photos of what you are thinking about first. Some things, like WW I chevrons for example, may be the same price for the originals.

PSS: I just looked at the Schipperfabrik site for the first time. From the photos, it looks like they make some neat stuff....and the correct early 1910 eagle snap pea green web gear used on the Mexican Border. However, most of that early 1910 gear is not really correct for a WW I impression or for sure an early WW II one.
