Amazing what gems you've uncovered in the LIFE gallery! And I thought I had seen all the best in it. Terrific pictures!

Hi Dean,

I'm getting the knack of looking for stuff in Life, a lot of good stuff is just listed under photographer and date, often the same photographer will do a lot of usaf stuff over the years so go through it like that. I've got the kids today so between them fighting and nappy changes I've had a bit of free time to look some stuff up.

I like these modified tanker helmets!!!!!!!!

me too;
it's not the 1st time i saw that.
but if for sure it was a common use in the post war era, i think this practice begin at the end of WW2.
i remember sawing this kind of tanker helmet in a book, i was thinking that it was a fault, sooooooooo maybe it was right.
but i really don't know (remember) in wich one, maybe it's in a friend's book houlalalaaaaaaaaaa

hope a day i found it back

Notice how some removed the left triangular leather clip-on piece to accomodate the squadron patch. And some didn't.
