B3 question

I have a great old B3 from the South Pacific theater (wasn'tit too warm there?) Probably China patch. I've always wondered what was the function of the leather patch on the shoulder - HH? Was it simply decoration?

If you're talking about the leather flap on the shoulder, I believe rank insignia was attached to it and then it was sewn down on the shoulder.

This is correct. I have a B-3 with leather lieutenants bars sewn on the rank insignia tags.

I kind of figured that's what the flaps were for but I wasn't 100% sure.
