a nice, original, wearable rough wear 18091 contract. this contract was awarded to rough wear in march 1941, prior to the us entering wwll, and a total of 17,628 were made. this one numbered 250 on the pocket label. the 18091 contract was only made of goatskin. the wrist knits are replacements. the jacket is named to k.m. dolan, who's name i found in the nara archives. if it is the same man, he entered the army air corps, as an air corps cadet. by way of the earlier type of p-51 painted lots of wear to the art work] on the back, and the painted numbers to the right of the aircraft, one would assume that he flew with the 503rd fight squadron. the shoulder decal would have been applied some time after 1942, and poorly at that [most of it has, and continues to flake off].

My god that jacket is in great condition. In some of the shots it could almost pass as a really good repro! What are the measurements on it, out of curiosity?

Really beautiful goatskin on that Rough Wear and it fits ya perfect! Here's a photo of V-D7 339th FG / 503rd FS P-51 crash landed. I wonder why the artist painted it olive drab and with a bubble canopy? Also, the 339th had a red/white checkerboard painted nose.

Amazing jacket, thanks for posting.
Grant, its very anomalous... Could this have been a later paint job?

Right Greg, but doesn't explain why he painted the 339th checkerboard in the wrong colors? I know that's nerdy stuff, but what else do we have to do these days! Maybe someone painted it after the war and got the colors wrong.

as tagged a size 40, the measurements are as follows. front length: 22 1/2", pit to pit laid flat: 21 7/8", sleeves 24 1/4", shoulder seam to shoulder seam: 17 3/4", back length from the collar seam to the bottom of the waistband: 24 1/4". best as i can guess, the shrinkage over the years is around %1.
