AN-j-3: epaulettes or no?

Hey gang,

I need a little more clarification on a proper AN-J-3. I’ve been doing some research into them and it seems one, the J3, is basically a G-1 with a leather collar. The other version had more of the features of an A-2. And that is where the confusion comes in. I was basically wanting to get an A-2 from 5 star leather, minus the collar snaps and throat latch apparatus, with the bi-swing back and arm gussets of a G-1. Would that be accurate or should I delete the epaulettes as well? I was planning on russet horse, is that accurate too, or should I go with seal goatskin? Thanks for any advice on this matter.

Welcome to VLJ, by way of an introduction, why not post a bit about yourself here.

That was very helpful. Thanks. I’ve decided what I want to do now after seeing the pictures of the actual jackets.

Funnily enough, i only fairly recently bought an A&F ANJ-3 which i have just got back after having the cuffs and waistband replaced for the correct type.
I wondered if there are any manufacturers that still make the ANJ-3 with the A2 type wind flap ?. I have a BK ANJ-3 which i love but i prefer the A2 type front.

Aero does a quite nice AAF version AN-J-3 (with epaulets & external windflap) upon request for a bit more $$ over their USN version (no epaulets / internal windflap). I have one, and it follows the authentic pattern fairly well since Ken had originals to work from.

Here's some pics of original AAF versions I have collected over the years:

EDIT: Here are a couple pics of my Aero before I received it from a member's classified listing:

That’s the one I’m looking to get. I prefer it to the navy influenced design.

Interesting USN jacket with the mouton collar replaced. Can you please post a close up pick of the spec label and zip? Thanks!

The jacket is from the 7823 (AER) series which ran from 1951 to 1960. Because it doesn't have the USN stencil on the back of the collar but instead USN is perforated in the windflap I think this jacket is from one of the last contracts before the introduction of the 7823A (AER) series in 1961.
