A Pet Peeve - Inflated Shipping Fees

I know this has been discussed before, but it's still one of my pet peeves, the $ 275 shipping fee. Buggers
Why don't they set a minimum beginning bid rather than play around ? :x

I figured I'd email this guy to see if he was serious about $275 for shipping. Here is our conversation. The guy is a bit of a nut, I think... The conversation actually starts at the bottom of this.

Dear jschare,

275.00 is a good price for a jacket of this quality and you know it. That 275 includes the shipping

Dear purple6192,

Well... Since I collect original A-2 jackets and repro A-2s and since Averix jackets usually go for less than $250, yes... I do thing $275 is quite excessive.

Dear purple6192,

Don't you think that $275 is a little excessive for shipping?

Dear purple6192,

Is the shipping price a misprint or are you really charging $275 for shipping?

That's my favorite. I thought the jacket only costs .99? The shipping is $275. I would think that yes, .99 is a VERY good deal for any clean jacket. $275 for shipping is against ebay policy and a simple notice to them should have his listing fixed.

Dear jschare,

If the jacket had a buy it now price for $250.00 plus the actual shipping, would you be interested? If not find something better to do than than waste my time.

Dear purple6192,

Then why not have a Buy It Now price of $275 and offer free shipping? Probably because you know the jacket won't go for that price and you're trying to make the price with your shipping fee. Your excessive shipping fee is against e-bay's policies, by the way.

I agree with you, what the seller thinks this jacket is worth may be different than what potential buyers think it's worth. If he's confident the jacket is worth $ 500, he ought to put it up with a reserve or starting price of $ 275.00 and let the bidders determine if it's a 'good' deal. In my opinion, when a seller uses this tactic of setting a ridiculous 'shipping' fee, it just makes me think he's being sleazy, deceptive, or ???.

I'm trying to understand his rational for this excessive shipping fee tactic. When a buyer pays with PPal, does eBay and PPal receive a percentage of the total paid (item+shipping fees= $275.99) or just a percentage of the amount paid for the item( $ 0.99) ? Does this tactic get him out of paying a higher percentage to eBay and PPal ? or does he just piss some potential buyers off ?

The reason this is against eBay policy is that he's saying the sale price is a dollar, and the shipping is $275, which is what he wants for the jacket.
This is an attempt to circumvent the eBay fees, and it does violate eBay policy.....

...now I see the listing has been removed (eBay or the seller, I don't know)

My link was all wrong, here's the correct link, it looks like it's still listed, it has one bid so far.

Your link still is broken, part of the link is inactive. Heres the correct unbroken one.

Anybody know where ebay would stand if someone were to bid and win the item for .99, then file a complaint against the seller for excessive shipping fees? I think these sellers take a huge risk and I would assume ebay would side with the sellers on cases such as this.

They'd probably cancel the auction. He's certainly risking being booted from eBay, but who can know what goes on in the mind of people who operate like this?
