Found some period pics of a 37J1

Caption says:

Lieutenant William R. Staggs in 1937.
He will serve as pilot of a naval reconnaissance aircraft in USS Santee Scouting Squadron 29 (VS-29) (CVE-9) and will receive the Navy Cross for his actions in Morocco in 1942.

Great pics. So the sexy USN font was used just not on the N-1 type jacket.

Regards,

Yep, I got the USN block font on my Cagleco too. It's the other font on my BR N-1 that I'm referring to.

Not a block font.

The roman stencil - probably a silkscreen by the look of it - was used on 37J1Bs made by North-Bilt Mfg. Co. of Minneapolis. Note also the stormflap extending up past the neckline. Both these details ended up on the W&G NA-1. Too bad they halfassed the rest of it.

(Look closely at Staggs and you’ll see he has folded his flap out of the way for the photo. It’s visible just over his zip pull.)

Always wondered why the stencils were done at point of mfe. Wouldn’t it have been easy for each service to stencil USN, USMC, USCG as required?

Did the Coast Guard, an arm of the Treasury, even get these jackets? Here's Lt. Cmdr. Richard Burke, air-sea rescue pioneer, with a Grumman Duck in the mid-to-late '30s. He still wears a cape 37J1. I can find no pix of USCG pilots wearing the cloth type.

I think I've seen Japanese repros stenciled Marine style, but none worn by actual Marines.
Anyway, the jacket looks good with the globe, so I have photoshopped it in.

Hey, if they keep making 37Js, it’s all good.
But just in case, I better watermark this.
