I thought it might be an electrically heated suit jacket, but I can't see one like it in Sweeting.

It is not the M43 jacket pile liner, the buttons do not go into buttonholes on the pile liner. My guess is either something electrically heated, or a custom made garment.

maybe he was on the Russian shuttle mission...my first thought was electric heat too maybe a brit suit or a locally made thing

I think those chaps in the helmets are not USAAF, and probably the chap in the mystery jacket too, which may be why we don't recognise it.

it's not the same material used for his confection
