Originals that I have seen (owned one) have all been painted directly on an a-2, or painted on a patch and sewn on, or the more common ones were (are) the multi layered leather painted versions. I concur with fe about time and provenance of your example. Btw, if you look at better examples of originals, they have a second meaning besides the critter holding bombs. That second meaning is a by looking at the whole patch, a skull type face. Ingenious design by any measure.
