Jeff,
Very nice. I only have one original on a jacket the 65th combat cargo. Not sure if it was WW2 or Korea as this jacket had been issued a couple of times (based on the marks for nametags and patches) plus it had US Air Force stamped on the liner. Interesting they left the US Army Airforce decal on the shoulder.

Tim,
Thanks for adding! Anyone else with original WWII patches loose or on jackets, please put them up here. Once we get enough, maybe we can go thru and place them in numerical order. It may make a nice patch reference/ID area. I've got a few more to add myself, and I know there are plenty of other guys here with some as well.

You can see the impression left by his sterling wings. I wonder what the unofficial attitude was to doing this. One of mine has the original holes as well but it's the exception isn't it?

Hi Tim (bombs away),
The 91st bomb group patch, is it located on the left or right side of the jacket?
As I mentioned in another thread, where are the patches supposed to be placed?
I know that most of them should go on the left side but what if you only got the Bomb group patch, would you still put it on the right?

Andrew,
I think it was done fairly often. Anyhow....here's a pic of him wearing the jacket with the wings.

Hi,

Jeff, the jacket + the picture of the original owner ! How lucky you are !!!

eskorpion_72, the 91st BG patch is on the right side of the jacket. The squadron patch is still on the left side but is very fadded and hard to recognize.
Usually the Squadron patch is on the left side and the Group patch is on the right. It's the most seen but I think I have alrady seen the other position with jackets shown in Maguire's "American Flight jackets". I have to check.

Very cool 15th AAF flag shoulder patch. That's one of the first ones that I have seen with the early 15th AAF symbol right in the flag. Pretty neat!

Did you see the 22nd patch? There is a number written on, any idea of what it represent?

Roberto,
The patch you have is that of the 22nd Bomb Squadron. It is mis Id'd as the 718th bomb squadron 15th AAF. That is what is written on the patch. Great repro of that flag by the way!

When I got the patch, the person that sold it to me told me that was from the 718th, it was 1998 in the same period which I got the flag and I didn't have any experience with patches.
After I discovered that the identification was wrong and in real it was from the 22nd.
That written doesn't fit than.... If you look at the number it looks more like 71B and not 718. Do you think that 71B would have some mining?
Other way I really can not understand how that numbers compared on that patch.
This question if on my mind from few years but until now.......

I saw it as a 718 right away. The pen just bled a little bit. I can see how the patch can be mistaken as the 718th Bomb Squadron, as they are pretty similar. I am positive that someone wrote the 718 on the patch thinking that was the unit it was. I would guess it was written on there quite a while ago, before patches were valuable, or at least I would hope so!

You are right that patches are really similar.
In my mind there was the possibility of a mistake of the one that "catalogue" it a long long past.
Time ago I was thinking about removing it in some way but that is they way the patch has arrived to me and I decided to keep it like that. ..... and let say a funny historical mistake.
