Hello all,
Funny how when you're not looking for something, it falls into your lap.
Upon recommendation from my vet, I went to a specialist pet meat supplies shop for my sick boarder collie. She needs to get some high protien meat into her diet, and kangaroo meat was suggested.
Right next to the kangaroo meat was - horse meat pieces.
So I got talking to the shop owner, who also happens to own an abattoir where she and her husband slaughter all their own meat. I asked about the situation with the horse meat - apparently when a horse is slaughtered its meat is used (pet food), the hair is used (crafts etc) and the hooves is used (training for farriers) - but the skins are discarded. The opinion expressed was that the skin is too thin to be made into leather.
I'll have to chat more with the shop owner next time I'm there... might be able to get a skin or two and have a go at tanning them myself (or send them to a commercial tanner in Melbourne) and have JC do something special with it at a later date...
