This is on nice looking jacket, wish it fit me though since moving to Cuba I have little need of any jacket. Anyone know anything about it?

Ok, so no function regarding jackets, just a reinforcement to use to stitch on insignia. I agree with the comment it looks a bit odd without sewing them down.

LOTS of WW2 guys never bothered sewing them down, its part of the look either way...............

I'm not suprised that they mostly weren't sewn down... more trouble than your average guy is willing to deal with.
