L-2A, Superior Togs, 1952...Help needed

Hi All,

I have a Buzz Rickson Superior Togs (1952 model) L-2A and I have a couple of questions for the nylon junkies out there:

Has anyone ever seen a Crown zip on an L-2A, either in a photo or physically seen one?
Also, were L-2As ever made with blackened snaps?

The more time goes on the more I believe this to be a bit of a fantasy repro. I can't find any reference to a 1952 contract, does anyone have that info? I've also never seen a photo of an L-2A with blackened snaps or a Crown zip.

I used to have a Buzz own-label L-2A with nickel snaps so it seems a bit odd they'd go for the incorrect type.

Thanks all,

T

I own two originals and have seen a number of other examples, and every one has had a blackened Conmar. That said, I don't know enough about the various contracts to say whether there could be an obscure variant out there (although I doubt it). In any case Buzz Rickson clearly panders to a market obsessed with "gee-whiz" oddities that often reflect the very tip of the iceberg rather than what was commonly issued and worn (the OD B-15C being a glaring example).

Hi,
Every photo I have show's blackened Conmars, some contracts had blue snaps and some blackened, never seen the crown except on experimental ones.

All the best

Thanks all. The problem is that the snap cover caps were often blackened brass but the actual snaps invariably nickel. The one on ebay has these as can be seen from one of the photos.

Thanks for the help though, much appreciated.

I think I know the answer to the crown zipper basically buzz Rickson brought over a million nos crown zipper from America when starting up and imo why they used them on a lot of there jackets plus I'm sure the first MA1 1957 jacket made after the b15 where crown zippers then change to conmar and scovil,I'm not 100% accurate on my info but that's just another threoy.

quick question, how does the buzz L2 fit, is it a bulky, blousy jacket with the wool/nylon mix lining or similar fitting to say a B-10/G1/Tanker, just that i have had my eye on one but no having owned one before i'm not sure how they are expected to fit - a slimish fit or a blousy fit.

L2A (the blue one) : Slimmish in the body for your average 10-12 kg overweight 6' tall European (me). If you're fairly fit and normal to sleek build overall, it should fit well if zipping up. The arms are relatively long and roomy compared with the body sizing. As if designed for skinnier Japanese with somewhat longer arms than average.

L2 (the olive one) : A noticable bit tighter (and shorter) in the body and the shoulders. Definitely best for the Japanese build (well, my impression of the Japanese build), not quite for the European build.

L2B (the sage one) : just a tad more room and just a tad longer than the L2A. Suited for the European build.

Based on owning three L2's, two L2A's and one L2B.

thanks for the info Rutger, the one I've been looking at is the blue L2A size 46 with a pit to pit size of 27 inches which seems quite large for a UK size 46, does sound about right for an L2 or more like a size 48.
I usually wear a site 46 and if I buy say an original G1, if the pit to pit size is around 24 inches then it will usually fit ok and more times than not it will be a size 46

Yes that's right, I forgot to mention the numbers: the Buzz jackets are overall larger than one would judge by the numbers (unless if you're an oversize fashionista).
Being close to XL, I often can do with a large L or a small XL.
Way back I ordered the L2B in XL with Eastman, but overall it was way too large in body and arms and it took me ten seconds of fitting to decidedly know that and send it back.
