A2 Collar Snaps

In the past 20 years, I can't recall ever having worn one of my A2's without having the collar snaps done up. Guess I always thought it was a better look for me...

I was just looking through the Good Wear website and realized John's wearing his A2's in every case with the collar snaps undone. It prompted me to look around at some vintage photos-and it seems everyone in those old photos is wearing his A2 the same, with the snaps undone.

I guess this is just so the collar is less stiff, more relaxed. How are you guys wearing yours?

I wear mine unsnapped.. IMO, on originals, or actual contract repros, the collars are practically individual... like fingerprints in a way, and are more stylish / pleasing to the eye opened-up, than more or less all looking alike snapped. :) It also provides a more adventurous look unsnapped IMO..

The collar on Perry Sports or a 1756 A-2s will sit considerably better with the snaps done up rather than undone.

The difference on most other contracts is minimal and mainly subject to taste although the early pre war stand collar jackets are generally better suited to being studded up.

How many of you wear a button down shirt with the collar point buttons undone?

unsnapped, with the collar turned up. this goes especially for originals as it alleviates stress on the vulnerable collar folds. the snaps on a-2s were originally intended to hold the collar down in open cockpit flying. if you have ever been flying in an open cockpit plane you know that if the collar is not snapped down, it flaps all over the place, and is super distracting. even as closed cockpits replace open cockpits, the snaps on a-2s were carried over to post 1930s productions. the navy had a better solution for their m and g series jackets. they had their collars made shorter, and stiffer, thus no need for snaps, and no flapping regardless of whether the collar was worn up or down. and, the fur lined inside of the collar was a genius design element.

Unsnapped normally but on the odd occasion I do snap them down! As Ken says A Perry with its more rounded collar is more suited to snapping down whereas the more pointed collars a la Doniger or Dubow do in my opinion look better/cooler unsnapped! An A2 looks great either way whatever the personal choice is - isn't that why we love 'em?

Guys,

Have to say I'm feeling distinctly in the minority in wearing mine with the snaps done up; I'm switching sides as of this week!

Thanks for all the replies.

Snapped. IMO this helps the collar develop the characteristic shape we are used to seeing for each contract. I figured I'd unsnap once that happened but never have as I notice them laying down too much like a sport jacket. That's just not an A-2 to me.

If you look at the fashion of the time large splay collars were comon in 'youth' fashio which may account for it, though when done up, especially with the collar stand versions of you have your 'head on a swivel' the collar simply gets in the way and can catch on the chin which is really annoying while your trying to be alert in a confined space for hideously long periods of time.
