Talking about stencils...

Ironing ain’t 100% mandatory - in my “beginnings” when I stenciled names and service numbers in my re-enactment gear I mostly didn’ iron and the stencils are all still visible

I do that ironing on fabric-jackets only since I use special textile colors

I use one called Palett which is fairly easy to find here in Norway. Comes in a wide range of colours for both light and dark fabrics.

What type/brand of fabric paint do you guys use?

I use Pebeo Setacolor. Good for leather and fabric both.

Great work guys. If you want to heat set the markings on your lining just turn the jacket partially inside out and pull the lining and leather shell apart. You can go crazy and pull the sleeves half out but you just need enough so that you can fold the lining over and are ironing cloth on cloth rather than cloth on leather. I’d still go easy as you don’t want bleed through but there will be no issue with leather.
JMO as usual,

Neat thread!

I wish I knew someone who could paint the stenciled “U.S.N.” in the accurate height and width as seen on the WWII N-1 deck jacket. I have the heavy N-1 repro from Buzz Rickson. It’s unstenciled since I purchased it that way from HPA. For some reason, Buzz never seems to use the correct stencil on their, otherwise very nice, N-1 repros.

I’ve examined many original WWII N-1’s and the U.S.N. stencil was painted on, in black, and not stamped, as I had believed at one time. Maybe I thought that since I’d seen so many other, apparently, stamped on Navy stenciling.

I think you are right! USN on the chest was not stamped. I`m not sure whether stenciled or maybe printed. As far as I realized different fonts where used for the USN marking so I would not be that concerned about the shape and size of those characters

Just my 2 cents

You could easily do it yourself with a little bit of experimentation. I'm not an expert but I've been stencilling quite a few things lately and think I might be able to help. Whizz me a PM if you want and I'll do my best.

It is true that the Navy had different USN stencils, but the overwhelming majority of WWII N-1’s have the very same U.S.N. stencil. I can say this with some level of confidence as I’ve been somewhat obcessed with the particular stencil on this particular jacket for about a decade. I’ve looked at many examples and always examine it when I see an original N-1.

I might be able to, but I tried it on another Buzz N-1, and while it turned out ok, the outcome of my handy work is too uncertain for me to attempt it on another expensive repro.

Ian you are perfectly right!

Before ruining a expensive jacket i`d keep my fingers off. Somewhen I also tried with stamping - bought one on EBAY - but that was a total mess.

When purchasing a PIKE BROTHERS N1 there was a stencil comin` in with the jacket which looked pretty realistic to me - will send you some pics when I'm back to Germany.

Ian I'm happy to help you make a stencil if you like. I'd need images and dimensions but I enjoy making stencils (it's kind of a new favourite hobby) so it's not a chore. PM me if you want (I won't be offended if you don't so don't stress it :) ).

I think we bought the same U.S.N. on eBay. LOL Yeah, using that thing is a bit dicey.

That would be great, I'd just have to gather the information. Someone had posted the exact size/dimensions of this particular stencil once on TFL along with the exact spot where it's located on the left breast including the distance from the zipper. If I can find that post, it would be quite helpful.

As an aside, I own a WWII U.S. Navy green "chambray" shirt, which I wear, but received in NOS condition several years ago. It has U.S.N. factory stamped on the left breast pocket. It's not a particularly rare shirt as I've seen numerous NOS examples on eBay, in the past. I don't know if they're currently popping up as I haven't looked for one in 3 or 4 years.
