Thats a killer looking Torino Uncle, interesting how with subtle details like the nose grill area certainly changes the looks. Used to watch Starsky and Hutch roll around in a Red Torino with a strange looking white stripe. Naturally Starsky was wearing his Navy m422a, at least it looked it, pretty cool jacket. If I was a cop thats the sort of jacket Id wear

If we didn't have the Vette, it would have been a replica Cobra, can't afford the real deal. Would love to do a Targa Smithy, when I had the alfaGTV6 we used to do track days with some clubs, that was always fun. My mechanic wants me to get it on the track, Im too scared after I've sunk all that money into it that she'd end up shiny side down if I was to put her on a circuit.

Do it Matt, put the old girl on the track even if for a few laps at a track day, at the least it's a good excuse to blow some carbon out of the old girl. It'll put a serious smile on your face.

Or Matt you could always do a "C'etait un rendez-vous".

Actually if you haven't seen this I reckon you'll love this. Claude Lelouch's short film from 1976 where he supposedly got a well known racing car driver to drive his newly purchased Ferrari 275GTB across Paris. The film was banned for 20 odd years. Count the number of red lights run and make sure you turn the sound right up.

That certainly gets your heart rate up, besides the almost collecting the light poles at Cleopatras Needle and sideswiping a bus, I counted 16 red lights he went through. And of course 2 wheels on the pavement to get around the dump trunk. He was definitely in top gear and doing 250 + a lot of the time some of it in scary narrow cobbled streets. Kinda reminded me of Gone in 60 Seconds with Nick Cage and Eleanor. Smithy, you shouldn't show me stuff like that, its liable to get me on the track again  Totally enjoyed that clip, and so did my wife, cheers to you good sir.

One of my dream cars Ken and I can't believe you got rid of it. They're worth a pretty penny now. I've only even seen one in the flesh at a show and what a beauty, louvred bonnet and all.

Yes Smithy, The MkII Jaguar was (still is) an amazing car, apart from far less practical XKSS, I feel Jaguar never reached that level before or since. put one through John Coombs' hands and you've got a car that could carry five adults in comfort and out run most E-Types. A fully modified Coombs MKII reached 100 mph a full ten seconds quicker than the factory supplied version! Yes, mine had a louvered bonnet, eyebrows, wide wires, triple carbs and I do miss her!!!!

I loved my many minis too, once we took up rallying more seriously we switched to Minis, here's a couple of my old Rally versions, Lydia won the 1400 Scottish Tarmac Championship in another, I'll try to find a pic of her car. The Blue Group A car (A13GPA) was the last "proper" Mini to compete in a World Rally Championship round

Actually, the camera was installed on Lelouch's Mercedes, and the video was dubbed afterward with the Ferrari sound. There were rumors around that the driver was a French F1 driver, but Lelouch always said it was him doing the driving.

Oh there's a lot of rumours swirling around regarding it. I've also heard it said the Mercedes story was given out to obfuscate the whole affair as well. A little known fact about it though is that there was a report in one of the Parisian newspapers about a red Italian sports car being driven dangerously early in the morning of the day before.

At the end of the day it's a remarkable (and highly irresponsible) bit of footage.

And Ken, love the Cooper photos, that Scottish Rally in 1996 looks a touch soggy.

What colour was your Coombs Jag? Please don't say BRG or sherwood green, especially if you sold her on!

Well this thread has completely gone off the rails. Sorry Thomas.

Well, as far as the camera on the Mercedes and the Ferrari soundtrack is concerned, Lelouch confirmed this is how it was done. Here's a picture of the camera fixated on the front bumper of the Merc:

If you can read french, here's a remarkable account of how it was done. that's where the above picture is coming from: http://boitierrouge.com/2016/03/25/cetait-un-rendez-vous-8-minutes-intenses-au-coeur-de-paris/

And yes, it is indeed a remarkable and absolutely amazing piece of footage!

Great photo and thanks for the link.

There was a rather good article in one of the classic car rags from about 14 to 16 years ago which attempted to get to the bottom of it due to all the rumours about it - sorry I don't have it as I've shifted country around 8 times since then, but it was one of those ones like Thoroughbred and Sports Car, etc . Part of the problem is that Lelouche has added to the confusion by contradicting and changing his story about it many times which was one of the reasons they did the article. It actually had that photo of the Merc with the camera which in the article was argued to have been a dummy run for the actual run (something Lelouche himself had said in the past), it was apparently used as a test platform for ascertaining whether it was possible and the quality of footage that would come from the rig. They'd also had some video and sound boffins examine the film and their conclusions were that it was unlikely to have had different sound run over the top for a film from the mid 70s. The final thing they had gone through lots of microfiche records from Paris newspapers at around the time Lelouche was making the feature film he was initially using that gyroscopic mounted camera for and they'd found the report of an Italian sports car driving in a dangerous manner in the early morning - they'd even been able to give a date for when it was filmed. The article contained more but that's all my aged brain can remember but it was very well done and argued.

TBH I don't know nor really care whether it's a Merc, a Ferrari or a Austin Princess because whatever it is it's a mad piece of film and the questions surrounding it has made it all the more interesting and intriguing and no doubt will continue to do so.

Maybe we should move this car talk to a new thread, otherwise we might be construed as hijackers. Nice mini footage by the way Ken, a mate of mine a while back had a Cooper Police special, with the wide flares you described. The thing went around corners like it was on rails and I remember it often blew away 5.0L Toranas off the lights. Fun car

Apologies everyone and especially the OP - Thomas, I was one of the key perpetrators in leading this thread off the garden path.

I do tend to get carried away when the conversation involves aeroplanes or classic cars!

Hopefully no harm done.

Im not even going to think about the cost !!! Its the last thing i think about to be honest , without sounding bigheaded , if i have the money available ill try and buy what i can at that point . Many "friends" have helped me in obtaining what i have and to those i am truly grateful for what i have . All i need now is for the good lady to understand i have a collecting "problem" !:D

Dragging the thread right back off topic again, the decent bank holiday weather has seen a lot of nice stuff out on the roads this weekend. I know, I’ve spent most of it driving as I’ve worked all of it. On Sunday I saw a proper Bullitt Mustang, an HRD motorbike and today what I’m fairly sure was an original Ford GT40.

I spend only what I earn not what a bank may loan me...( applies for my cars and homes as well)... Investing in Matthews NC right now...
Jacket wise... one high end repro jacket/quater.....
reselling whats not needed anymore whenever a replacemet comes handy.
Nowadays I am more in originals if wearable, rather than the prime makers repros...
