Buzz Rickson Sea water rinse blue N-1 Deck Jacket USN review

With the winter season finally making way for some warmer weather and blue-ish skies I thought I would post some pictures of what has been my go to jacket over these last autumn and winter months.

For anyone who doesn’t have a N-1 jacket, I would highly recommend one. Not only is it a cool looking jacket ( well James Dean and Paul Newman thought so ) it certainly keeps you warm.
There are several manufacturers producing repro’s so there will is plenty of choice out there and you can seek out a well worn original as well should you wish.

The jacket pictured is my second N-1 purchase. Originally I bought one off a fellow forum member (EmergencyIan) that was a Buzz Rickson jacket, originally produced in 2008 in a olive drab colour. Both are great jackets.

On my original version it has the USN stencil marking on the front. On this blue jacket the stencil marking is on the back of the jacket showing US NAVY.
( I know Charles on the HPA website in the States does offer this jacket without the stencil should customers want that ).

Much as I loved the Olive drab N-1, I always liked the look of the navy blue version which was the colour when original produced but was changed I understand to better enable camouflaging of the USN personnel both at sea and on landing.

I decided to get another N-1 in this colourway and I choose the Buzz Rickson version once more. ( Other manufacturers and their jackets are also available !! ).

Buzz Rickson offer two versions of the N-1. Their standard version and the heavier Alpaca Demotex version which this blue jacket is. Hence it’s a warm jacket to wear.

I have read that the Alpaca can be slightly scratchy but I have not encountered this when wearing it. It’s a comfortable jacket to wear.

The lining colour in vintage jackets can be found in both grey or brown. This heavier Buzz Rickson blue jacket version that I have has the brown lining which distinguishes it from the lighter weight standard version.

The jacket is a superbly detailed reproduction of the issued version, with the correct weight double-faced Jungle-Cloth outer shell and woven Alpaca/wool blended lining, and faithfully reproduced components such as the period correct zips, buttons and labels.

My blue jacket pictured has been through a 'sea water wash' process which gives to some ( although there are doubters on the process ) the authentic look and feel of a jacket used well over the years.

100% cotton reproduction Jungle-cloth shell
Authentic alpaca fur and wool lining
Reproduction 1942 Talon zip
Buttoned front wind flap
Hidden knitted ‘storm-cuffs
Draw string waist.
Two external slash hand warmer pockets.
USN stencil on rear.

I turned over the sleeves to slightly shorten the length ( the blue version is about an inch or so longer than my original drab jacket ) and this has the added benefit of the sleeves now matching to the collar. I saw this on an orginal USS Hornet picture - look at the sailor holding the camera on the left side.

If I could change anything it would be that this style of jacket had a inside pocket or two to allow me to store some items that can be safely tucked away.
The front two slash pockets are deep and store items OK but sometimes its good to put things well away from potential pickpockets. Still I guess that's what trouser pockets are for !

Whether it’s the khaki colour or the blue colour version if you are looking for a jacket to keep you warm and make you look fairly cool at the same time do have a look at getting a N-1.

My BR Demotex "sea wash" has been dog walking jacket all winter. Always kept me warm in the below freezing temps. I do think the BR Demotex jackets are cut slightly bigger than the standard BR deck jacket.

Both look great Alan, I wore my original Spiewak ‘Excalibur’ deck jacket to Twickenham for the rugby today. It got a little warm in the sun, but was a practical choice in the cooler periods. Definitely one of my keepers.

Alan, initially, I was just looking at the photos and thought: hey, that looks like my old N-1! Turns out it is. It looks great! Glad to see it, again...as I obsessed with and wore it for about 7 or 8 years. Made a few changes etc.

Alan purchased the jacket from me and I dropped it off at his hotel in Manhattan.

I now own the heavy Demotex version minus stencil from HPA and it’s outstanding. It’s even warmer than my original BR N-1. Though it’s also a size 38, it’s larger than the first one that Alan now owns.

Damn it. Just when I don't need another bloody jacket now I'm trying to convince myself that a N-1 would be useful here - actually it probably would make a good spring even summer jacket here as when the wind turns here in the Arctic even when it's a warm day it can get chilly very quickly. I've been thinking about getting one of these for a year or two now and the itch just started up again.

Always wondered why Buzz and Real MCoy's indicate the sizes of their N-1's by words and not numbered sizes, like the originals.

????

Both my Buzz N-1’s are sized and tagged as 38.
No words like small medium large etc on the tags.

I stand corrected on Real McCoy's. They still use the numbered sizes on their blue N-1.

No, no. The standard Buzz N1 has always had word sizes such as small, medium, etc. Bur they say their medium is a size 38. I gave no idea why.

Their “heavy” or Demotex N-1’s have numbered sizes.

Buzz seems to get details confused, at times, and even when this is brought to their attention, they ignore it and forge ahead. For example, no WWII (or any, for that matter) N-1 deck jacket has a Demotex label. That’s found in the matching overalls/coveralls. However, Buzz “confused” this detail and continues on with the error run after run. With their standard N-1, the USN stenciling is in correct in lettering and method, but Buzz has never corrected it. The stenciling lettering and method is seen in many Korean War era N-1’s, but not on any WWII era that I have ever seen.

Both are very fine jackets, but the facts are the facts. This situation is frustrating to me, but, overall, the jackets are so good that I can get past it. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t continue to irk me. I’ve been told that when confronted WUTB these issues/facts, Buzz’s response is the Japanese customers don’t care. So...

Looks good!

Ian, so are you saying that the "fancy" USN stencil on my BR Demotex, labled size 42 is incorrect? ;-)

Regards,

Not sure if Ian is saying that.

However I have seen images ( moving film and photos ) with jackets worn with a US Navy stencil on the back of the coat.

The stenciling on the back on the navy blue N-1’s is correct or seems to be.

It’s the khaki/OD N-1’s that have the stenciling issue. Obviously, Buzz realizes it, but doesn’t think it’s a big deal, as they’re certainly capable of applying correct stenciling to their OD N-1’s. Maybe it’s an act of defiance, at this point.

Another thing that I remembered is this WWII coveralls are sized small, medium and large. Additionally, the USN stenciling on them is, in many cases, the same as the what’s seen on Buzz’s standard OD N-1 (and sometimes it's the same stenciling as the WWII jacket). So, Buzz got things mixed up, initially, and never cared enough to correct it. The jacket is so good and has sold so well, I guess it really hasn’t mattered. It’s just curious and frustrating for us jacket nerds...for me at least.

Another example is that Buzz always sized their basic tanker jacket (maybe all of their tankers) in numbered sizes when the originals were sized small, medium, large, etc. They’ve been producing them for over a decade but no correction. It’s another well made jacket that’s sales haven’t been hurt by this fact, so why bother, as far as they’re concerned?...
