Goose bay Labrador was the largest Airfield in the world during WWII

Aircraft transiting to Europe, Antisub, and cargo flights all staged through Goose Bay

Of course the cold was also legendary

Check out the link for a great series of photos in vivid Kodachrome that show airmen and ground crews wearing a variety of sheepskin

A couple of A-2s also show up worn by ATC crews

Enjoy

Talking about the jacket color, this picture must have been taken later in the war when all the A2's were Depot re-dyed to the same dark seal color for uniformity of color.

I wasn't able to open the link as usually happens here (China) for me. However, the pictures posted here are outstanding and one does get the impression they could have been taken yesterday, truly amazing.

Regarding the bartender opening the steel beer cans; it was my job to open cans for my Dad, circa 1950's! I never spilled or tasted a drop.:)

Finally, in the last picture the two men wearing the A-2's must have been freezing. The gentleman at left is wearing sunglasses, I have had a pair of these for about twenty years and it's the first time in memory I have actually seen the same pair being worn during the war. I was never sure if they were in fact from the war years.

Don

Very cool. Beautiful vibrant colors, as someone said, like the photos were shot yesterday. The guys in sheepskin were no doubt a lot happier than the guys in the A2's.

I was surprised how white some of the newish B-7s were, not cream. The exposure seems spot on in this photo
