I don't so much mind when people want to sell something nice among people who have the knowledge to appreciate it, but I get that sometimes it's just a take without contributing situation. I don't want to discourage people who see this forum as an authority on vintage originals and high end repros, as that's a good function. Honestly, there are plenty of other more general forums but this one can really provide history and insight that others can't.

I know it's a forum for members, but in the larger internet, it's also a significant resource of expertise. It's occasionally misused, but I wouldn't want to do anything to diminish that reputation.

Yeah this is hardly a problem.
Mods have things under control.
This place surely loses money and it needs visitors.
There amount of spam here is nil compared to other places.
More talk about it than actual spam.
As always, ignore posts that are of no interest.

They do?
Loses money? We are not a financial organisation. We have members, thank you.
That's because of the way things worked here.
Prompted your input.
That way things would/will get worse.

calm down, fellas. there may be a solution that makes us all happy. when a person sets about joining the vlj, why not have a"read this" before joining, which could respectfully suggest or request a little bio, and a set number [perhaps 3] of thread interfaces, or thread starts, before going about flogging some who knows what. a forum about "watzit? watzit worth?" could be started, as well. i have to deal with newbie surfers all of the time, and while some guys and gals in the line up get pissed at the newbies lack of common sense, and or indiscretions, i make a point of calmly but firmly explaining how the line up works. most are happy to be dialed in and surf without getting the stink eye, bad yap, or laughed at.

Good ideas for new members SS.

Back when I still surfed there were a couple of breaks back home where if you dropped in on the wrong someone it was pretty much fight time, these two were great spots but some of the locals at them were very territorial, real surf Nazi types, Dead Kennedys on the car stereo and lots of lip at the local fish and chip shop with anyone not from round there.

It's the norm to not allow sales and messaging until new members reach a certain point.
This place has members. How much do we pay? Nothing.
So yes, it loses money almost certainly.
If anything, it might somehow break even. Might.

So I guess it's better to go back to three posts a week?
This place was dying. At least modern software will help attract and keep members coming in and contributing.
There may be six guys who want a private club, but you'll have to pay for that fun.

Scott, I reckon one of the things that some of the old timers around here don't like is the occasional person popping up here to just show up asking "what's this jacket worth?" and then buggering off to eBay never to be seen round here again. They feel this is just a case of using their knowledge which they've built up over time, just so someone can scoot off and make a profit on eBay.

I totally understand though where you're coming from in terms of growing the membership and having a lively forum, and that's where SS/Vic's suggestion could be a good one, it encourages some initial participation rather than just fly by night new members.

TBH, it doesn't really affect me, I don't deal in VLJ and don't have the "market knowledge" for what the going price is for this or that flying jacket. I'm here because I like them, occasionally buy them, love the associated history and work for an aviation museum, so get to play around this kind of stuff and get paid for it :)

I reckon VLJ has picked up a bit, I've been a member for 8 and a half years but aside from brief periods of activity or now and again posting, I've mostly been a silent lurker. I've started engaging here more this year and am really enjoying it, far more than some other fora I've been a member on.

Cheers,

Tim

It just make me laugh that people get disappointed at human nature . Ok someone comes on line for a free appraisal so what ,I get a big kick out of the Antiques road show .When someone presents an artifact that has been in the family for generations ,the presenter goes on an about what a rare fine piece this is . The owner then is getting more and more excited and then come the part how much is it worth . Then the appraiser says at market auction should receive bids in the region $40.00 the look of disappointment of the owner .I bet you in those massive lines to get an appraisal only 5% have any interest in the maker history and such ,getting something for nothing that's what it is about the main thing is what is it worth !. So someone joins comes on line and then want to know how much something is worth , he does not care about the forum etiquette because he is ignorant (he don't need no stinkin badges) . To get upset about an ignorant person makes no sense , bring something to the forum to elevate it .Whining and moaning should be sent directly to the moderators . Looking at the content of this forum is mostly about show and tell , or that's a nice color jacket shame it is not my size, you cannot post this here ,there is no meat an potatoes here that what we should worry about bring something on line worth reading

I understand hating spam.
I understand not liking someone coming in just to sell and be gone.
But I bet that if these same guys were selling a jacket, they'd be perfectly happy to sell to a new guy?

Like I said, I agree with the points about limiting activity until someone spends some time/efforts here.
But, if you put your pics/knowledge, etc. up on the internet, it will be used by others - which I thought was the whole point.
Again, if someone doesn't like the direction, they can find other places, start their own forum, or make a private Facebook page.

The moderators do a great job, and for free. When doing this job, you get notified of spam, etc - usually from other members - but I also (I mod a couple still) have a life and don't go in and deal with it above the other things like family/friends, 24/7/365.

I just also don't like stodgy old farts who bitch about everything "new".
People
Software
Topics
etc.

Life moves on fellers, you can fight it or play the game...
